Captioned Movies: When the Wait for Digital feels like “Waiting for Godot”

Special guest: Nanci Linke-Ellis writes a guest blog post about the process for getting an open captioned film to screen.

The process for getting an open captioned film to screen is a relatively easy process:

Studio agrees to provide prints to be captioned. These formerly known as “InSight” 35 mm prints are sent to the captioning agency approved by the studio. The captioning agency creates the caption files “master”. The captions are then lased directly onto each print of the film. The studio can do as many or as few copies as it desires. It is the most cost-effective way to support the accessibility needs of deaf and hard of hearing movie-going audiences. Prints are then picked up by the shipping company and then readied for transport to theatres. These prints can go on any screen and are not dependent upon equipment in an assigned auditorium.

Once the availability of the film is announced, the movie film buyers within the respective theatre chains arrange to book engagements in any given city, theatre and auditorium. Once the initial engagement is done, the OC prints are then shipped to the next city, and are bicycled around the country. It’s the shipping company’s responsibility to make sure the print is ready for pick up and delivered to the next theatre with ample time to set up the film in a theatre.

The major problem has always been that there is a greater demand for OC prints than what the studios are actually willing to provide.

There has always been a chicken vs. egg theory. Theatres think audiences won’t come and or a patron can’t make a 10 pm screening.

Despite the hurry up and wait transition to digital, 35 mm prints are not going away. Last week alone, Sony provided for 3,000 prints of “2012” while Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” screened in 3,683 auditoriums. By contrast, “Precious” from Lionsgate only had 174 screens.

So no matter how many times a studio executive will insist that 35mm is obsolete, the numbers continue to contradict their presumption. There are approximately 37,000 screens in the U.S,. but only 8,000 have some form of digital screen in any given auditorium. Digital Cinema corsortiums made up of studios, theatres, manufacturers and other vested parties are still creating a global digital industry standard (specifications). Accessibility features like captions and video description are not mandated by the DCI groups. They are, however, included in the Society of Motion Picture Television Engineers (SMPTE) standards which are also in the process of being finalized.

Theatre chains can only show film titles are that are licensed to them and presented in the format given.

The other Open Captioning system, known as DTS-CSS, is an equipment based system whereby the captions are projected onto the film screen. They use the same disk that contain the caption\video described files as MoPix (Rear Window Captions).

How to find out if Twilight New Moon has captioned showings near you

Hello everyone! We are getting emails asking if Twilight is being shown with captions and where can they find out when it plays in their area.

We can verify that it'll be captioned but we cannot guarantee that it'll be captioned everywhere. It won't be shown with captions all at the same time, but spread out over time in different locations.

This is why we strongly recommend that you take advantage of Captionfish's E-mail Notification feature. You can sign up to be notified when a captioned version of Twilight New Moon comes to your area. Here's the Twilight New Moon E-mail Notification page: http://www.captionfish.com/movies/the-twilight-saga-new-moon/notify

1) If you REALLY want to see it, we recommend setting the notify for both RWC and OC options, that way you definitely do not miss out.

2) VERY IMPORTANT: Please look for your e-mail confirmation that Captionfish sends to your E-mail address. Please click on the link (or copy/paste into your browser's URL window) to confirm that you want to be notified when Twilight New Moon plays in your area. If you do not do this, Captionfish cannot notify you. This is to protect people from unwanted spam.

We hope Twilight New Moon comes to play in your area. Enjoy!

Captionfish Action Alert - call Disney now! 1-800-723-4763

BE HEARD! It's bad enough that many deaf and HOH people have to wait for DVDs to be able to enjoy movies in captions or subtitles, but what happens when Studios start making decisions to REMOVE captions from DVDs???

This is why we need you to call Disney and file a complaint with them for removing captions/subtitles from rental version of Pixar's Up. Please call Disney now and let them know how you feel: 1-800-723-4763 http://bit.ly/1LTpeP Lets hope this NEVER happens again! Thank you!

Captionfish's E-mail Notification: What It's For, and How To Use It

Hello everyone!

Thank you for all your enthusiasm and feedback on Captionfish's new beta update! It has received a tremendously positive response everywhere! E-mail Notification is shaping up to be a popular feature!

The idea behind E-mail Notification is to send an email to each visitor when the movie they want to see is now available in their area. Unfortunately, many captioned movies are passed around the country with limited release in each location so people have to keep track of and wait for it. This situation is why Captionfish provided E-mail Notifications. We try to help make sure, to the best of our ability, that you do not miss the movie you want to see! :-)

If you want to see a movie but it is not showing up in your Instant CC Film Finder results page, visit that movie's captioned trailer page and look to the right of the Video and click the link next to the pink envelope icon.

You will be taken to an E-mail Notifications page where you can submit your e-mail address and choose OC, RWC, or both OC/RWC as options. Captionfish will send you an e-mail asking you to click or copy/paste the link to confirm it's you. If you don't do this, you will not receive an E-mail Notification. This protects everyone from unwanted e-mails. If you do not get a Confirmation in your InBox, please check your Spam folder.

We hope you enjoy this new feature! As always, Captionfish is for you. Please let us know if you have any feedback.

Captionfish Gets Bigger and Better with Beta 3 Update!

To celebrate what has been a successful six months (our statistics) since we first launched Captionfish, we've added a bunch of new features:
  • E-mail notifications: Get e-mail notifications when Captionfish finds captioned showtimes in your area for the movie(s) that you want to see! Look for this feature in the sidebar next to every trailer that you view.
  • Revamped Movies Directory: We redesigned the Movies Directory page (now called Trailer Directory) to better organize and display all of our captioned trailers. New releases, upcoming movies, current showings, and previous showings are all listed separately in an easy to find format.
  • Captioned Movie Indicator: There are times when Captionfish has shown captioned trailers for movies that are released without captions, leading the visitors to think that movie will be released with captions. To prevent confusion, we now tell you which movies are, or will be captioned in the theaters. Each of the individual trailer pages has a note on the right sidebar under the movie poster that lets you know if captions are or will be available for the movie.
  • Descriptive Narration Movies: Beginning Friday, Captionfish will start pulling in and listing movies that have descriptive narration (also known as DVS) which will benefit viewers who are blind or have low vision. You can even filter on this on the results page!

To top it all off, we've got a new sponsor! Many thanks to Convo Communications for their enthusiasm in throwing their support behind the Captionfish brand.

We are working to expand Captionfish's results to include foreign and subtitled movies, but we need your help. If you know of, or have a favorite theater that you think should be listed, let us know!

Thank you for using Captionfish. We wouldn't be where we are today without your support. Again, we remind you that this site is for you. If there's anything you'd like us to add or improve on, please do not hesitate to let us know.
